Special Notes for Feis Attire

Below are attire guidelines for Shovlin Academy students planning to attend feiseanna. These are not official feis rules. However, we feel they are appropriate, common-sense policies that will lead our school in a healthy direction. We appreciate your cooperation.

About Hair
If you decide to go with a hair piece or wig for convienence, please choose a wig that suits you (i.e., looks natural). Be leary of wearing one that is too long as this tends to make a dancer look shorter. From a distance, you find yourself asking, is that the child's real hair? If it seems so, it's a good match. Think "outside the box" and do not use other feis goers as a guide (as very unnatural looking hair pieces seem to be the unfortunate norm these days).

Wearing hair up in a bun is usually cooler and requires less fuss on the part of the parent.

Wearing hair securely off the face with a plain barrette or head band is also an option.

About Makeup
No makeup should be worn on small children and pre-teens.

If makeup is worn by older dancers, it should be kept at a minimum.

Feiseanna are held in brightly-lit rooms where ostentatious makeup, glitter, and hair pieces are simply unnecessary.

There is no distance or stage lighting involved, so remember natural is best. The dancers are only a few feet away from the judge and audience, just to put things into perspective.

Parade Attire

The dress code for everyone marching is as follows:

Shovlin Academy Warm Up Jacket
Try on at class and place order. Please pre-pay: $35 child, $40 adult. Check website's Marketplace for used jackets.

Solid White Turtle Neck
Kohls, Target, Wal-Mart or Sears as suggestions or other clothing retailers (layers under). Be sure to try the boys section of these stores as there may be a better supply there

Solid Navy Headband & Mittens/Gloves
Dick's, Sears or Kohls. Will have some for sale at upcoming lessons.

Pants
Dancers: Shovlin Academy logo pants (girls and boys)
Parents: Long solid navy pants

Shoes
Girls - Solid White Tennis Shoes
Try Payless or Famous Footwear. Please, just white.
Boys - Solid Black Shoes

Once again, all dancers, family and friends are invited to march but everyone must abide by the above dress code from head to toe (although parents can simply wear comfortable footwear). Everyone, please come prepared for the weather.

Dress appropriately for the weather and wear many layers underneath your jacket/pants/mittens. The navy dance school logo t-shirt should be your lowest layer in case of warmer weather. We strongly suggest you purchase for your dancer throwaway hand warmers and foot warmers (from Dick's Sporting Goods, or Bed, Bath & Beyond, or the like).
